Investigating Kitchen Fires – 1 hour CE

The significant financial impact caused by cooking fires in recent years warrants investigation from both the public and private sectors. These investigations require the application of “court approved” fire science in developing hypotheses to identify how the range or stovetop came into contact with a fuel for a sufficient duration to cause ignition. This class will also focus on the impact of several variables in stovetop fires and the ignition of cooking oils, including the sequence of events, from the heating equipment used to the time involved, and how this can provide valuable information towards identifying accidental cooking fires or debunking false witness statements.

About the Presenter:
David Cheers is CEO and Senior Fire Consultant at Jack Ward Fire Consultants, a forensic fire and explosion investigation company headquartered in Green Cove Springs, FL. After 13 years of firefighting experience and extensive investigative training at the Florida State Fire College, David became a full-time investigator with the Bureau of Fire and Arson in 1997. In 2006, David retired as Lieutenant from the State Fire Marshal’s Office and began his employment with Jack Ward Fire Consultants. With numerous courtroom testimonies in State and Federal courts as an expert in the field of fire origin and cause investigation, David has been instrumental in the investigation of many high-profile cases including those involving serial arsonists, arson for profit, insurance fraud, and homicides.
